User & Password Info: Username: guest Password: 77 Username: root Password: 99 History: Phalanx, literally meaning "roller" in Greek. The main strike arm of ancient armies from before King Eannatum of Lagash (2500bc) to Alexander the Great and beyond. The phalanx featured Heavy infantry; shock troops trained in using mass and momentum to "roll over" opposing forces. Alexander the Great's Macedonian Phalanx was the pinnacle of phalanx technology, his troops being armed with 23ft long pikes and 1M (3ft) diameter bronze shields. Against the armies of Persia, India, and even Greece; Alexander's phalanx's overwhelmed and destroyed all opposition, even though often outnumbered 5:1 or more. Many of the greatest battles of antiquity were decided by the awe-inspiring phalanx formation; Marathon, Issos, Granicus, Guagemela, Leuctra, Thermopylae, Cunaxa Mantinea, Hydaspes, Pydna, and many more. In Honor of perhaps the greatest tactical fighting formation in History; I present Phalanx-9.04-Live-rc1.iso Code Name "Oblique Othismos". I made Phalanx especially for Writers! If your a writer of any kind, web-dev, etc you will enjoy this Ubuntu-9.04 remaster. ## Hard drive Install Installs just like any other Ubuntu to hd install simply boot off cd/usb, login to the guest account then double-click the install icon from the desktop. ## USB fat32 install If your usb already has syslinux installed, you can simply copy the contents of the iso to usb and boot! You must mount the iso and then copy it's contents to usb. You can use isomaster (included) to extract the iso to us too. Best option is to use Unetbootin to install Phalanx to any bootable USB device. Unetbootin is included, as well as usb-creator and imagewriter a app for writing usb .img's to usb. I made it so Unetbootin does the best usb install and I implore you to have syslinux 3.72 & up installed to usb in order for the graphical vesamenu to work. Note that Ubuntu-9.04 will install a "hacked" version of syslinux 3.63; which will not work with a graphical menu via vesamenu.c32 Thus I have the syslinux/isolinux.cfg's set so you can choose either a text boot menu (menu.c32) or a graphical boot menu (vesamenu.c32) If you want to make the graphical menu permanent, simply delete or move the syslinux.cfg from the syslinux folder to wherever. Then rename the vesamenu.cfg, in the syslinux folder, to syslinux.cfg edit the new syslinux.cfg and delete the entry for returing to main menu label -- menu label <<---Back to Menu kernel /syslinux/menu.c32 Now, add the menu entries, for Plop and NetbootCD, from the orginal to your new graphical syslinux/isolinux.cfg label - menu label Reboot kernel /syslinux/reboot.c32 LABEL plop MENU LABEL Plop Bootmanager TEXT HELP * Can boot USB, CD, USB-CDROM * Plus more, even on PC's * without BIOS support * for booting USB's,etc ENDTEXT kernel /isolinux/plpbt LABEL nbcd MENU LABEL Start ^NetbootCD 3.1.2 TEXT HELP * net-install any Major Distro! * based on Tinycore ENDTEXT kernel /isolinux/kexec.bzI append initrd=/isolinux/nbinit3.gz quiet nolocal norestore base Once installed to hd, as a full hd install you can use remastersys to make your own cut! ## CD,USB,HD persistent frugal install You can also run Phalanx-9.04 as frugal persistent from CD, USB, USB-HDD, and even a ext2/ext3 hard drive partition! Either burn to cd-r, install to usb via Unetbootin, or install to hd in frugal mode by simply copy iso contents to a partition on your hard drive, as with usb above. Please see inside the docs.tar.bz2 folder or the ubuntu homepage that opens when you open firefox here- https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD/Persistence Please note that for some reason the persistent file named "casper-rw" does not work!? However, making a "casper-rw" partition does work. meaning if running from USB, you will have to make 2 partitions example sdb1 is your usb sdb1 fat32 phalanx-9.04 usb install sdb2 ext2 labeled "casper-rw" If booting from HD/CD as persistent, follow the peristent.html instructions and make a ext2 or ext3 partition labeled "casper-rw". Enjoy! #################################### 503box-Live aka "Lenny & 3/4" ######################################## 11/01/09 revised 11/05/09 Base: Remastersys LXDE 2009.07 Lenny Build Date, rc1: 11/01/09 4:00PM Build Date, rc2: 11/05/09 5:30PM Desktop: Fluxbox; heavily modified Info: After initially installing Remastersys LXDE Lenny, I began modifying not only Fluxbox but also the "way" Remastersys makes the "remastersys-backup". Basically, I edited the remastersys script in /usr/bin/ and also the remastersys config's in /etc/remastersys. The fluxbox desktop has been modified by me, and I also have lxpanel and gkrellm2 running. There are so many apps that to make the livecd I had to mksquashfs the /usr/share/doc folder. Please unsquashfs the docz.squashfs now in /usr/share/doc after installing to HDD. The command is to cd into /usr/share/doc, as root, then # unsquashfs docz.squashfs # unsquashfs-lzma docz.squashfs (for rc2) Please also read the docs in the docs folder in the iso and in this folder. Burning ISO to CD-R/CD-RW: Recommended that you use k3b or Brasero in Linux or Nero or Imgburn(freeware) in Windows. Always burn at slowest speed! Choose "burn iso image to cd" or similar, not data/audio cd! Booting from FAT16/FAT32 USB/USB-HDD: This is where I have modified the remastersys configs so that Unetbootin can easily install this cd to your fat32 syslinux USB. You can either use Unetbootin to install to USB OR you can manually just copy the iso to your USB. Assuming you have syslinux already installed, and you have the boot flag set on USB. Simply mount the iso and copy to your mounted USB. 1) cd to where the iso is, assuming its on your Linux desktop. cd Desktop mkdir tmp mount -o loop 503box-Live-rc2.iso tmp cp -a tmp/* /media/usb0 the instructions above assume that your USB is mounted on "/media/usb0" your USB may be mounted elsewhere, like /mnt/sdb1, etc To find out your USB device name, in Linux, as root, with USB inserted. type the command "fdisk -l" into a root terminal. thats FDISK and a - dash and a little L fdisk -l Much easier to just use Unetbootin, available for Windows or Linux. http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ BOOTING from EXT2/EXT3 USB/USB-HDD: If you are using a ext2/ext3 usb booting with grub, please peruse and edit if necessary the Grub menu.lst in the docs folder. I have set it up to boot as hd0,0 that is the first HDD. If your USB is different please edit! Installing to HDD: To install to HDD as a full Debian install, simply boot off the cd or usb and use "remastersys installer" from the menu to install to HDD or to USB as full install. Please do this from the root desktop if necessary. Frugal Install to HDD: This is basically the same as booting from USB but quicker. Basically, copy the folder "503box" and "preseed", from the mounted iso, to a ext2 or ext3 partition of at least 750MB. Make a boot folder and a grub folder inside that on that partition. Install Grub to that partition and use the example grub menu.lst in docs folder editing for your partition number. If you already have a Linux distro, such as Ubuntu/Debian etc, then just copy the 503box and preseed folders to that partition and edit your grub menu.lst for your Ubuntu, etc install. Persistence with Frugal CD/USB/USB-HDD/HDD install: Please see persistence.html for more info! I have made 2 "503box-rw"'s for you, just unzip one of these to a writable fat32,ext2,ntfs partition somewhere and use the "persistent" boot option from the boot menu. The persistent 503box-rw's must be on a different partition than the 503box-Live system. You can run persistent from cd,usb or hdd! example usb persistent: partiton layout sdb1 fat32 minimum 700MB sdb2 ext2,ext3,fat32 place the persistent file here You can also just "label" a existing partition "503box-rw" and this will work as well. Please read the persistence.html!! Please also read the debian faq, persistence.html, and parameters.txt in the docs folder!
